Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC) is an autonomous statutory body created as per "The Protection of Human Rights Act of 1993” for the state of Nagaland. NSHRC is mandated to inquire into human rights violations for subjects referred in the state list and concurrent list mentioned in the seventh schedule of the Constitution of India. The Chairman and members of the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission are appointed by the Governor of the state on the recommendations of a committee having the Chief Minister of the state as its head, and other members include, Legislative Assembly speaker of the state, home minister in State Government and the leader of the opposition in the state Legislative Assembly.
The Nagaland State Human Rights Commission (NSHRC was established based on the Notification No. CON-7/HR/23/2016, Dated 4 th Jan.2016 to exercise the powers conferred upon and to perform the functions assigned to the State Human Rights Commission under Chapter V of the Protection of Human Rights Act. The commissions become fully functional with the appointment of its Chairman vide Notification No. CON-7/HR/23/2016 (Pt) Dated: 13-03-2023. A Member of the Commission was appointed Vide. Notification No. CON- 7/HR/23/2016 (Pt) Dated: 17-07-2023.
Presently, Justice Songkhupchung Serto,(Retd Judge of Gauhati High Court) is the Chairman and Shri. R.Nzanbemo Lotha (Advocate) is a Member of the Nagaland State Human Rights Commission.
